Kim Young-woon became a trainee under SM Entertainment soon after he won first place on the 4th SM Youth Best Selection Best Outward Appearance in 2002. He made his first pre-debut appearance in the SBS drama, A Man And A Woman in May 2002.
Although originally auditioned to be an actor, he was placed under many all-boy project groups, including the rumored group Four Seasons, a four member boy band that was to include Kim Heechul, Hero Jaejoong, and U-Know Yunho. However, both U-Know Yunho and Hero Jaejoong soon debuted as members of TVXQ in 2003, leaving Kim Young-woon and Kim Heechul to join Super Junior two years after. Kim Young-woon decided to use the stage name Kang-In, which is translated to "strong person," to show his strength as an entertainer.

On November 6, 2005, Kang-In as a member of Super Junior, officially debuted on SBS's Popular Songs, performing Super Junior's first single "TWINS (Knock Out)." Five days later, Kang-in became the MC of M.NET's M!Countdown along with Leeteuk and Shindong. The three members remained together as the hosts throughout their career until Kang-In was replaced by Eunhyuk due to his busy schedule for hosting MBC's Good Friend Radio and Show! Music Core. He was also a former DJ for Reckless Radio, but is now replaced by bandmate Sungmin and Sunny of Girls' Generation. He is currently an active DJ for MBC's Good Friend Radio with Cho Jung-rin. Kang-In also became the host in two of MBC's popular entertainment programs, Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club and Nothing is Impossible. Along with the rest of Super Junior, Kang-In has been the host of Explorers of the Human Body, a Sunday night variety show which premiered on November 11, 2007. To solve questions about the human body, the group performs experiments with their own bodies to answer the questions.

In February 2007, Kang-In was placed in the six-piece Super Junior-T, the second sub-unit in Super Junior. On February 25, 2007, Super Junior-T debuted on Popular Songs with their title song "Rokkugo!!!" Super Junior-T released their first single on February 23, 2007, ultimately selling over 44,902 units.
Although active in both singing and hosting, Kang-In continuously makes guest appearances in variety shows, such as Star Golden Bell and KBS's Girls Talk. Being active in television, Kang-In earns the highest salary in Super Junior.

 MBC controversy

A time-slot dispute occurred between SM Entertainment and MBC when SM insisted to have Kang-In stay on SBS's Explorers of the Human Body instead of MBC's Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club where Kang-In was a regular host. MBC decided to temporarily ban Super Junior from appearing in any future performances on MBC.Kang-In was replaced by T.O.P of Big Bang as the MC of Show! Music Core. Kang-In can also no longer host MBC variety shows Nothing is Impossible and Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club until the conflict is resolved. MBC also demanded to receive an apology from SM Entertainment if SM artists should continue to perform on shows hosted by the channel. Kang-In's radio program with MBC, Good Friend Radio continues to air since it is not related to his work conflict. A week later, MBC announced that they invited Super Junior to film an exclusive MBC segment, "Giving Children a New Life" despite their previous decision to ban Super Junior. The entertainment director for MBC claimed that the ban on Super Junior was never official, but....
